The Brief
Refurbish and extend the trading area of the Sweden Shop. The project required replacement lighting, flooring, new tills and refrigeration. We were also tasked with the supervision and co-ordination of direct contractors for specialist services.

The shop to continue trading throughout.

Pre Contract
We met with IKEA’s design team to investigate the feasibility of the project in terms of extending the trading area into existing prep and office space while maintaining essential access to electrical switch gear.

During a series of further meetings we developed the scheme to a full specification and program of work for presentation by IKEA designers to senior management.

The Project
All work was programmed to take place out of trading hours which at the Wembley store meant commencing at 12:00 midnight daily or after 6:00 PM on Sunday.

As part of our management of the work we had a project manager on site at the beginning of each shift, our foreman throughout the night and a second project manager for hand over at 7:00 AM. This enabled us to keep all aspects of the project under close supervision and deal promptly with any issues arising during the night shift and any variations requested by IKEA.

We extended the trading area by removing partition walls and re-installing new MDF walls after sourcing a suitable hygienic cladding appropriate for the food prep area.

New vinyl flooring was laid throughout the enlarged trading area.

All refrigeration units were replaced and new electrical supplies provided. We also replaced all the downlighters and renewed the electrical supply.

We co-ordinated the relocation of fire sprinklers and also the installation of new data cabling to facilitate the installation of new tills in new locations.

We redecorated all perimeter walls of the trading area.

The shop was kept trading throughout the project and sales were maintained at projected levels.

Design - The new display was designed in house by Stewart Waller, Steve Williams & Simon Giddings of Commin.

Installation- The new flooring display system was prepared and installed on site by PW Shopfitters Ltd. The joinery for the unit containing the touch screen was manufactured off site by PW Shopfitters Ltd. All installation work was undertaken by PW Shopfitters Ltd outside of normal trading hours with minimum disruption to business.
